What's the scoop on
stevia side effects?

The subject of stevia side effects has been rather controversial in the United States for the last few years. Why would that be? Is there really danger in stevia rebaudiana, an herb that comes from South America that has been used for centuries? What's the deal with the natural sweetener stevia?

If you read the article on this site about stevia sweetener, you'll find out exactly what stevia is, a safe, natural and healthy alternative to artificial sweeteners such as aspartame and sucralose, chemically formed sweeteners that you know commonly as Nutrasweet® and Splenda®.

Aspartame and sucralose are proven neurotoxins. A neurotoxin is any substance that is capable of destroying or adversely affecting nerve tissue.. Yeah, that means plenty of side effects! You don't have to take my word for it though. Do your own research. Here are a couple of sites that offer information on these toxic chemicals that the advertisers will never tell you. Stevia has no such side effects and has been used safely for a long time in South America and countries all over the world, especially Japan. Japan has actually banned aspartame.

What's troubling is the fact that there is false information floating around that there's a stevia side effect related to the reproductive system. I've read several forum posts about women trying to conceive saying that they were going to stop using stevia because of this false data! More current and accurate research is finding many health benefits of stevia, such as antioxidant properties and beneficial effects on blood sugar, hypertension and weight loss.

Where did this misleading data come from? Well, until recently, the FDA has limited the use of stevia in the U.S. to a dietary supplement only. It couldn't be added to foods. This was based on studies in 1968 and 1988 where rats were given extremely large doses of stevia and their fertility seemed to be affected.

This led to the assumption and spread of incorrect data that stevia can affect the reproductive system. Well, the researchers themselves pointed out that these studies could not be translated into any stevia side effect on humans, for one. Secondly, the large doses of stevia fed to the rats were far in excess of what a human would consume!

Fortunately for consumers, especially people with diabetes, people following low-carbohydrate diets and folks who are looking for healthy ways to cut their sugar consumption, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved stevia product rebaudioside A (rebiana) as a general purpose sweetener in December 2008. Rebiana is an ingredient derived from the leaf of the stevia plant.

Here is a short video by a well-known and published medical doctor, Ray Sahelian, M.D. about stevia:

So if you were wondering if there were any stevia side effects you should be concerned about, hopefully this answers your questions!
