Losing weight without exercise
Losing
weight without exercise IS possible. I have personally
lost 45 pounds so far by diet alone - and I did not struggle
or put my health in jeopardy by following some idiotic
idea like losing weight with laxatives either!
I tried losing weight WITH exercise and calorie restriction
for most of my life and it was practically impossible!
Not that it can't be done, but I found that trying to
lose weight by eating less calories and using more calories
took most of my attention for practically the whole day.
I'd spend so much time and effort working at it and worrying
about it and the results never seemed equal to the amount
of work I was putting in!
Personally, I got damn sick and
tired of paying attention to figuring out how many
calories everything I ate and
drank contained. It's too time consuming and it just
didn't seem right to me that it was "the only way" to
lose weight. Does it seem right to you?
The idea that the only way
to lose weight is to "burn
more calories than you consume" is not true.
It is not the only way. Unfortunately, it's difficult
to
change that idea in our minds because so many people
think that it is true and it has been hammered into our
minds for so long and with so much force that we can't
think straight on the subject any more!
Furthermore, there is another false idea that is very
common, and that is that if you lose weight, then you'll
be healthy. FALSE FALSE FALSE FALSE! It's the other way
around. A healthy weight depends on a healthy
body, and
when people learn what the body actually requires to
be healthy, specifically what healthy nutrition is and
adjust their diets accordingly, they naturally lose weight
- without exercise.
Losing weight without exercise depends
first on realizing that the "calories in, calories out" method
is not the most effective way to shed excess pounds.
That idea assumes that all types of food are basically
equal, and the only difference is "how many calories" does
it have?
That equation is flawed simply because of the
fact that different types of food are handled by the
body (metabolized) in very different ways. The different
nutrients we consume - protein, carbohydrate, fats and water - all serve different functions in the body,
not
simply fuel (calories) for energy production.
Check out this article on calorie
restriction at Wikipedia
for an enlightening look at the origins of this theory!
A word here about exercise. The purpose of exercise
is not to burn calories and lose weight. The
purpose of exercise is to improve health. Exercise is physical
activity that is focused on training or developing the
body for the sake of health. There are 4 different types
of exercise that improve how the body functions, and
they all contribute to having a body that works well.
That exercise helps us look better too is a bonus!
Losing weight without exercise can be accomplished
by healthy, low-carbohydrate eating. It will
work best when old, ineffective ideas of counting calories
and weird
fad diets are thrown out and an attitude of becoming
knowlegeable on what the body actually needs and runs
on to be healthy and fit is adopted.
There are several components
to really understanding what "healthy eating" is.
The most basic factor that impacts health and weight
is the pH
balance of the body, so learn what that is as one of the first things
you do. The pH of the body is affected by what you consume,
so learning what keeps your pH balanced and adjusting
your diet accordingly is going to have a tremendous impact
on your health, including your weight. If you're really
interested in losing weight without exercise, this is
vital to understand and use in your life.
Healthy eating means knowing what foods
provide optimum nutrition and which foods don't. Basic nutrition
data and the nutrition
of foods, plus healthy
eating guidelines will get
you on the road to knowing what is healthy and
why it's healthy! An excellent resource on healthy
foods and cooking is The
World's Healhiest Foods.
As far as a low-carbohydrate lifestyle, you can get
a good overview at About.com's Low
Carb Diets.
In a nutshell, the reason low-carbohydrate diets are
effective is because the body uses both fat and carbohydrate
for fuel. When there are a lot of carbohydrates in the
diet, especially refined carbs like sugar and flour,
the body has plenty of fast burning "fuel" and
doesn't need to go to its fuel in storage, which is fat.
One last note about losing weight without exercise,
or losing weight period. Water is crucial to the body
in order to metabolize fat. The health
benefit of water includes fat metabolism in addition to a great number
of health benefits and drinking enough water is part
of healthy nutrition.
Cheers,
BB
