Fruit. Does a body good!

Most of us are aware that fruit and health go together; that "an apple a day keeps the doctor away." But do we know why including fruit and vegetable in our nutrition is actually vital to our health and well-being?

Clue: Hippocrates, who is now known as "the father of modern medicine," said that our food is our medicine. I think he was especially referring to fruit and its health benefits!

In the article on nutrition data, we went over that the body requires specific nutrients in order to work its best. Fruit nutrition facts not only include healthy carbohydrate, but an impressive array of vitamins and minerals in the diet that make it possible for our bodies to work at peak performance.

But what is not well known by the general population is that fruits contain other substances and have positive benefits for health that may seem miraculous - but only if you don't know how the body works and what it needs!

    Antioxidants counteract aging effects, not just cosmetically but throughout the entire body.

  • Out-of-whack pH contributes to a vast majority of health problems, such as cancer.

    Ever wonder why the American Cancer Society recommends 9 servings (a serving = 1/2 cup) of fruits and vegetables per day? Because they balance the body's pH - create an internal environment where illness cannot survive.

    Cancer and other illnesses bite the dust in a slightly alkaline body fluid environment. That's one of the "miraculous" health benefits of consuming fruit and vegetables!

  • Fresh fruit and vegetable consumption also provides an abundance of digestive and metabolic enzymes to the body.

    Enzymes are a type of protein that facililtate digestive and metabolic changes in the body. For example, after we eat something, it is enzymes that change the food into smaller particles that the body uses for maintenance and energy production.

    Overcooked, processed and fast food is known as "dead" food because all the enzymes are killed. If you've heard of a "raw food" diet and wonder if it's a food fad, it's not. I think it sounds a bit strange, but it really means "not-cooked-to-death," live food that is rich in enzymes that will restore health.
