Flour as a home burn treatment?

I have been told that if you put flour on a burn for at least 10 minutes, it will greatly relieve pain and scarring. Is there any truth to that?


Dear Ed,

No, there is no truth to that. It appears to be an urban legend, a hoax that has been circulating on e-mail lines recently.

Proper first step for treating burns:
"Cool the burn immediately with cool water to reduce the skin temperature and stop the burning process, numb the pain, and prevent or reduce swelling. Do not use ice on burns as it may decrease the blood supply to the area and may actually make the burn worse."
