Do low carbohydrate diets work?
A few of the benefical effects
of low carbohydrate diets
"Do low
carbohydrate diets work?" is a question that more and more
people who want to lose weight once and for all are asking
these days. A low carb diet is working wonders for me,
and it is unlike any other type of diet I have ever followed.
After a lifetime of struggling
with weight AND Type 1 diabetes, learning about the effects of low carbohydrate
diets on health - and then evolving my diet to a low
carb approach, I am finally succeeding in my weight loss
and health improvement efforts! Yee ha!
Not long ago, I got a new doctor.
On my very first visit, he prescribed the book "Dr.
Bernstein's Diabetic Solution" because I've
had Type I diabetes since 1961. Dr. Bernstein's book
educated me
on how carbohydrate
affects blood sugar levels and weight. I was pleasantly
surprised at how much sense the information made.
Dr. Bernstein prescribes a very low
carbohydrate diet for successful diabetes management
- the weight loss is an added benefit!
Not only have I lost over 40
pounds so far (when I really thought I could never lose
weight due to the diabetes and trying like mad but failing),
my blood sugar levels have improved immensely and my
cholesterol levels and the other stuff they measure have
continued to improve.
If you ask me "do low carbohydrate diets work?"
I can honestly say that they do. And I'm not the only
one!
Here are some references regarding the beneficial effects
of low carbohydrate diets:
From Medscape Medical News
"More Evidence Supports Low-Carbohydrate Diet"
"May 17, 2004 — Two
randomized trials reported in the May 18 issue of
the Annals of Internal Medicine
further support the efficacy of a low-carbohydrate
diet. A six-month trial showed higher participation
and greater
weight loss, and a 12-month study showed similar weight
loss but better lipid profile than with a conventional
diet. The editorialist uses findings from both studies
to advise physicians and patients.
"This diet can be quite powerful. We found that
the low-carb diet was more effective for weight loss," lead
author Will Yancy, MD, from Duke University Medical Center
and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Durham, North
Carolina, says in a news release. "We also found
cholesterol levels seemed to improve more on a low-carb
diet compared to a low-fat diet."

From Journal of Scientific Exploration
"Low-Carbohydrate Diets"
Joel M. Kauffmann
"...Conversely, other sources
from the medical and nutritional literature, based
on studies and trials,
show benefits of low-carbohydrate diets, both in weight
loss and in improved values in conventional tests for
hypertension, ‘‘hyperlipidemia,’’ (elevated
levels of blood fats; for example, triglycerides, cholesterol)
and inflammation. This is often found to be the case
in the actual data, even in papers on studies designed
to provide evidence of the opposite."

You can bet that there's plenty of controversy about
this. Just keep in mind when you're looking for the answer
to the question, "do low carbohydrate diets
work?" that
anyone can spew out negative crap about something, but
if they don't have hard core results (such as my personal
success and the above references) that it's merely an
opinion!
