A
Useful Definition of Physical Fitness
The definition of physical fitness has
become complicated and confusing because of many differing
opinions on what it means. Note that these are opinions on
what physical fitness is - which may or may not align with
the actual definition.
We'll keep it simple. Let's look at the
definition of each individual word first.
Physical (in this sense) means "of
the body as opposed to the mind."
Fitness (in this context) means "suitableness, appropriateness,
adaptation." It
is derived from an Old English word that meant "in good physical condition,
in excellent trim (good condition or order), healthy."
The definition
of physical fitness would mean the ability (suitableness)
of your body to
perform a given activity. This spans the range from
bending down to tie your shoes to being able to climb Mt. Everest!
There are different levels of
fitness just as there
are different levels of health.
A common perception brings to mind a picture of a body builder
or a professional athlete. While those guys are definitely at a
very high level of physical ability that's needed to perform
those specific
activities or sports,
there are other levels too!
Any level of fitness is related to
your level of health. Fitness and health go together, they're
not separate. There really can't be one without
the other. Being fit means being healthy. If someone
isn't very fit, you
can be sure that
he isn't completely healthy and full of vitality either.
There are 4 primary factors which add up to health
and being fit::
Getting a useful definition of physical fitness can help you improve your own level of fitness.
